Glamazons,
New York Fashion Week isn’t even over yet, and already, my framily (that’s friends that have become family, btw) and I are planning a weekend getaway. Traveling is my way to relax, rejuvenate and come back even stronger. Plus I just love exploring new lands and cultures — and let’s face it, sleeping on the beach. Since I’ve traveled quite a bit in recent years (which was totally a part of my vision board but more on that later), I’ve become sort of a professional when it comes to traveling and packing.
Here are some of my tried-and-true tips:
-Edit.
I’m going to be totally honest: if I had it my way, I’d bring my entire closet with me wherever I go. I mean, what if I only pack my black pumps and my mood changes when I get to my destination and suddenly I want to wear my neon pumps and I can’t? That’s the worst feeling (and yes, I understand this is a #firstworldproblem, lol). But because this is a struggle for me, I pull out everything I want to wear and edit it down to the essentials. I try to aim for basics that can be mixed and matched, and only a few bold standout pieces (sorry, neon pumps).
-Pack light.
I recently discovered Flight 001 and can I tell you: I’m obsessed? They have adorable passport holders, shoe bags and more that help you keep track of your things and save space. I swear by them.
Another tip? I saw this video on packing to conserve space in your suitcase (by folding each piece inside another piece) and I swear by it.
-Prepare.
I never met my great grandmother but I rely on so many of her wise sayings (passed down through my grandma and Dad) like this one about always being prepared: “It’s better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.” This has saved me many times like when it rains (I always have an umbrella!) or when my battery dies, and I have a portable charger (with adaptors for different phones!) handy.
When it comes to traveling, I prepare for anything that could happen. For example, even though I may check oversized beauty products that I love, I also keep the essentials in my carry-on bag just in case my luggage gets lost/stolen. So my toothbrush and toothpaste, my deodorant, my Carefree pantyliners, my bodywash, medicine (Advil, Aleve, etc.) and a few natural hair products are always by my side. That also goes for anything I’d be heartbroken to lose like designer shoes, expensive dresses, etc. Plus I keep all my tech items on me from my computer to my laptop to my extra battery.
-Pack smart.
My blogger bestie Christina of LoveBrownSugar taught me the best tip about traveling, and making the best use of your bags. Since you’re allowed one purse and one piece of carry-on luggage, put all your flat items (i.e. clothes you can fold) in your carry-on luggage and put items that take up more space (like shoes, for example) in an oversized tote. It keeps your carry-on luggage from getting too big and clunky that you can’t bring it on the plane. Truly brilliant.
-Leave room for souvenirs.
People never remember this (until it’s too late) but if you’ve ever had to lug your souvenirs through the airport, or stuff them into your bag to the point it’s going to explode or even spend loads of money to send them to your home address, you know it’s important. During my edit above, I always remember to leave some extra space in my suitcase for things I might buy while on vacation. It always pays off immeasurably when it’s time to come home and I have a million things I didn’t come with.
