What I Wore: Saying Goodbye to #MBFW in Moschino #GlamazonFW #NYFW

Glamazons, it’s the end of an era. This is the last season of New York Fashion Week when Mercedes-Benz will be a sponsor (and when the seven-day festivities will be held at Lincoln Center). Can I be honest…I’m not so mad about the location change (I actually miss Bryant Park and never got acclimated to Lincoln Center for fashion shows) but Mercedes-Benz?! Is it wrong that I feel a little sentimental about the sponsor drop and name switch? Change is good, and I’ve now been covering fashion shows for eight years (sixteen seasons!) so I expected Fashion Week to evolve over the course of a decade.

I remember my first round of shows. Everyone wore black and could walk into any show just by dropping a name (Seriously, I’d get to my show, invite in hand, and the PR girl would tell me someone already checked in with my name. Upon walking in, I’d see my friend in my seat. Cray!). Now, people dress as colorfully as possible with the intention of getting snapped by street style photographers, and they scan your DNA bar code to determine if you’re truly on the invite list. New era, indeed.

Though the logistics, location and even the name has changed, the one thing that keeps me coming back to Fashion Week season after season (even after that time I sprained my ankle, had a scary bout with exhaustion or stood in heels in the freezing cold) is the thrill of seeing a designer’s collection for the first time, and getting inspired by their boundless creativity, passion and ingenuity.

That happened when I saw Moschino’s Spring 2015 collection (and I wasn’t even there in Milan!). I loved the Barbie theme and how it permeated everything from the shoes to the sunglasses. I loved that Jeremy Scott also dressed street style stars on the day of the debut, an unconventional marketing strategy that premiered the clothes on the runway and the street simultaneously.

It felt right to wear his pieces for my last shoot at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Lincoln Center, because that’s what we’re all here for: innovation. As long as that never changes, I’ll gladly follow Fashion Week wherever it goes.
