Tips For Mixing Prints

Glamazons,

Mixing prints requires that you use your imagination, something I never get tired of doing (seriously…I’m an “old woman” with the spirit of an overly excited five year-old).

To mix and match patterns that would never traditionally go together, you have to think outside the box.

I definitely took that approach when it came to this striped Forever 21 tank, a hand-me-down from my boss at The Magazine that I originally thought was too preppy and loose-fitting to work with my wardrobe.

But tucked underneath this adorable flirty printed skirt from Urban Outfitters, it got new life.

Combined with my H&M chambray shirt, the mix of preppy and feminine totally works with my style. I love how it all came together.

And since you can never add to many glamorous accessories, I spiced things up with my neon and sky blue jeweled Miriam Haskell necklace worn here.

I finished the look with my beloved Prabal for Target neon sandals in ‘Sulfur Spring’ worn here and here and here. Told you I love them!

There you have it: mixed prints that don’t look like I threw everything on in the laundry bin like Glamazon Channing warned against in this style advice post.

Speaking of style tips, I have a few more for mixed prints:

1. Mix Larger Prints with Smaller Prints

Scale is the key to mixing similar prints, including a popular combination: animal print on animal print. An example is to mix a classic leopard print top with a larger, more graphic version of the same pattern.

2. Find a Shared Color

Color is a great connector for two varying prints. If a grid print top and floral print skirt share a color like red, they’ll be complimentary when mixed together.

3. Treat Stripes like a Neutral

Online retailer eshakti identifies stripes as the easiest print to mix. Stripes act as a neutral that plays off bolder and louder patterns well. You can combine stripes with florals, polka dots, graphic prints, geometric prints, animal print and more.

4. Stay in the same Color Family

A great rule of thumb when trying out mixed prints for the first time: sticking to the same color family. A black and white polka dot skirt with a black and white floral top are a foul-proof way to nail the mixed print look.

That’s it! Are you going to give the trend a try? Are you a professional at mixing prints that could rival Solange Knowles or Michelle Obama? Tell me in the comments.

Do you like my look?
