Glamazons,
One of my favorite Fall trends? Sporty goes glamorous! Athletic gear gets luxe! You’re probably thinking to yourself: what in the world is she talking about?
Well, this is a trend you’ve seen before in the ’90s on trendsetters like Aaliyah.
It’s a bit tomboy, a bit glamour puss all meshed into one. I’m talking sweatshirts with skirts and caps, jersey shorts with stiletto heels, football tanks with blazers and frilly skirts, and more.
We spotted it on the Fall 2013 runways at Herve Leger, DKNY and Proenza Schouler:
And it’s pretty easy to recreate: all you need is a trip to the back of your closet (or your boyfriend’s) to go toe-to-toe with this look.
Here are a few tips on how to mix glamour with a sporty edge and make it all your own:
1. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
This trend is all about breaking the rules. Pair things together that don’t conventionally match like sweatshirts and skirts, shorts and heels, and the like. Don’t be scared to step out of the box with this look.
2. Create an equal balance of masculine and feminine.
The sporty trend has a lot of masculine pieces like the baggy jacket and baseball cap. Be sure to pair it with equally feminine elements like red lipstick, stiletto heels and sequin skirts.
3. Be mindful of proportions.
Since masculine pieces are traditionally less form-fitting, keep proportions in mind. For example, I am short and sassy (smile) so an oversized jacket would swallow my frame. Instead, I would choose a bomber jacket and pair it with a looser-fitting dress for a more flattering silhouette (and throw in a platform sneaker to give me some height). Likewise, if you wear a baggy sweatshirt, rock it with a sequin mini or shorts to balance out the looser top.
