At the end of Solange Knowles‘ concert celebrating the release of her TRUE EP at the Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night I had just one gripe. One nagging issue that frankly left me feeling robbed, empty and borderline upset. Am I being a little dramatic? Maybe. But is it will deserved? Of course!
Glamazons, the show was WAY too short.
Let me explain. I am a huge Solange fan. I have been digging on Beyonce‘s little sis since her 90s days as an awkward teen rocking colorful braids and mismatched clothing.
Fast forward to 2012 and my girl Solo is oozing confidence as a sassy and sexy indie/R&B singer.
Adding to her cool points, she filmed her latest video “Losing You” in beautiful South Africa showing the continent’s often missed cosmopolitan and hip side. Her travels to the motherland and subsequently being on the cover of Elle South Africa while wearing local designers made me fall for her even more.
To say that I am a fan of her entire experience would be a huge understatement. I LIVE for Solange.
However, 45 minutes for a show was not enough for me. I remember murmuring in what I thought was a hushed tone “no, NO this can’t be it” much to the amusement of a fellow concert goer. He laughed but I was totally serious. I wanted more!
That being said, I still give her show from a scale of 1 to 10..a well deserved 1,000. Solo slayed, Glamazons! With diva-esque stage presence and an incredible band, she kicked her off her set with new music from the her album ‘True‘.
From the onset she serenaded the packed to capacity crowd with her angelic straight-out-of-heaven voice. Serving us a cool mixture of 70s hair a la Donna Summer and her signature eclectic style in a Kenzo Spring 2012 printed blouse and skirt, she was a vision of effortless cool.
For folks not familiar with her new music, Solange also threw us “old fans” a bone by singing a few songs from her second album “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams“.
A personal highlight was when Solange attempted to sing her duet with Bilal from her previous album and hit a bit of a road bump. She stopped mid song and said “No wait..this s!ht isn’t working. Sometimes you win and sometimes you f!cking don’t.” Hilarious!
At the very end of the concert, Solange jumped into the crowd and grooved with the crowd. There was no bumrushing or Michael Jackson episodes with crazed screaming or fainting audience members. Just an artist who has connected with her fans in a musical heaven of sorts. It was a beautiful moment.
Herein lies the beauty of Solange. Life is far from perfect, especially when you are a sibling of quite possibly one of the biggest singers on the planet. But striking out on your own and finding success on your own terms is the mark of a TRUE Glamazon.
Glamazons, what do you think of Solo‘s new EP? Do you love it? Tell me in the comments!
xo.
