There is nothing about me that would classify as minimalist. I like my heels to be high, my bracelets to jingle, my accessories to pop and my clothing to make a statement.
Yet I found myself intrigued by models who looked like a masterpiece in minimalism pumping down the Spring 2011 runways and months later, the celebrities who graced the red carpet during the 2011 Awards season (below).
I actually might try my hand at this unassuming look. I don’t think I will die from a lack of sequins. In fact, I think it would be quite sophisticated to dress in muted colors for once.
So ladies, I have a few tips that will make everyone look glamazing as minimalists, even those of us that love high heels and sequins.
Choose a neutral color to work with.
I mentioned that I am a fan of dressing in one color from head to toe for the elongating benefits for a petite girl like myself. The same thing applies when staying in the same neutral color family. Stick with shades in the same tone for a fresh clean look.
Note: minimalism doesn’t just mean all black. You can get the same benefits you would get dressing in all black by dressing in the same muted color family. So you’ll look taller and thinner in head-to-toe soft grays and tans and added bonus, you won’t look washed out!
For Some Fun, Incorporate Color
How fab would a pop of color be with muted colors? Think camel with bright fuschia. The color energizes your look and just screams Spring.
Mix in different textures.
Keep things interesting by mixing in different fabrics like silk, satin, suede and leather. Be a rebel and ignore what you heard about mixing textures; as long as it’s in the same color family, it works.
Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize.
Because dressing as a minimalist is a great canvas for a great accessories, go all out! Break out the knuckle clutches, pile on the necklaces, paint your nails some crazy color or wear some snakeskin pumps. Add a flair of your personality to complete the look.
Are we ready to be masterpieces of minimalism? Uh, p.s., 10 points if you know where I got that phrase from!
xoxo,
Glamazon Channing
