Glamazons,
One look at my outfit post sitting on Manhattan steps in a tutu, and it’s clear “Sex and The City“‘s Carrie Bradshaw‘s style had a great influence on me. Carrie‘s career left an equally grand impression: I followed her footsteps to the big city in hope of a fulfilling job that financed my shoe habit and fed my curiosity about love and life.
Since moving to the city, I found my very own Samantha Jones, quite a few Mr. Bigs (umm, Aiden, where are you?!) and I dream of one day getting paid $4 a word to contribute to Vogue (I felt like I came soclose with a piece on Elle.com last year). While writing a piece in Juicy Magazine about the show’s 15 year anniversary, I reflected on how impactful the show was to me, to all of us. The “Sex and The City” brand has a special place in my heart, and I weep every time it gets tainted by a sequel or spinoff that doesn’t live up to the original series.
To be honest, I left the “Sex and The City 2” movie feeling disappointed. Carrie‘s love life, once fascinating and unpredictable, had turned stale. Her quirky, trend-setting sense of style was suddenly gimmicky. The movie was reviewed poorly because the ladies were steeped in luxury while the rest of us were knee-deep in a recession. But to me, the negative reception signified more. It meant that we should prepare to officially say ‘Goodbye’ to the provocative, groundbreaking series so we don’t do any more damage to its legacy.
Don’t get me wrong: I loved the characters, loved the fashion and (sort of) loved the writing but “SATC 2” felt like happy hour had come and gone and the ladies refused to leave the bar. Now, with rumors swirling about a “SATC 3” movie, I have to wonder: do we really need another round of drinks?
Michael Patrick King, the show’s executive producer, recently hinted at a “Sex and The City III” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“I think there’s one chapter left […] (‘Sex and the City’) spilled over into people’s lives and the characters were rounded enough that you could still wonder where they are […] It’s all really about the stories. Not whether you can get away with it, not whether anybody will buy it, not whether you can make money on it.”
Sarah Jessica Parker is on board, telling InStyle: “A part of me thinks there is one last chapter to tell. But timing is a peculiar thing. It isn’t a decision that can wait forever. I don’t want to have to wear muumuus!”
Cynthia Nixon may not share her enthusiasm as she told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think we had a wonderful ride. I think it’s fine to let it go.”
I would love to see my girls on the big screen again, but I have to wonder if they’re beating a dead horse with the third installment. What do you think, Glamazons? Am I being too harsh? Did you love “Sex and The City II”? Are you excited for a “Sex and The City III”?
Kisses,
Glamazon Jessica
Agreed. I feel like it’s done. The first movie was fine but the second was reaching. Do we REALLY want to see a movie about women in their 50s still get drinks and clothes above their means while making relationship mistakes most of us figured out at 22? Ehh…
Crying at relationship mistakes we figured out at 22. Ouch! I agree…unless they take it into new, realistic territory, it just won’t be interesting. I’d still pay to see it though LOL
Oh yes I’m still gonna see it! But I realize how unnecessary it really is! LOL
Well, they would have to have a GREAT script..but it’s a risk. I’m still in love with the series and the last 2 movies.
Totally agree. If the script is great, all’s forgiven. I think they should get Candace Bushnell to come back and write — she’d nail it!
I still love it. But I do think that they need to do something totally unpredictable to Carrie. They need to start the movie unexpectedly with Carrie & Big with 3 year old twins. I would love to see how she juggles fashion and work with them.
Or Big dies bc of his bad heart and she later finds he had been cheating the whole marriage. Something BIG (no pun intended) needs to happen. Great piece by the way Jess =)
Umm maybe you should write it – these are great ideas. I would love to see Carrie with babies and how she adapts. Now THAT’s a story. Thanks for reading, luvvie! xx
