What I Wore: Kmart Fashion Remix Challenge

Confession? I’m a bit of a nerd (and I’m sure you guys are like we already knew this…) so whenever I hear the word “challenge,” I always, always want to step up and win. Bonus when that challenge involves free clothes and a fun, carefree photo shoot with my friends. That was the case a couple weeks ago when Kmart invited a few bloggers to their Remix Challenge with host George Kotsiopoulos from “Fashion Police.”

I headed downtown to Tribeca Skyline Studios for the event where bloggers were asked to style or “remix” one or more Kmart fashion items with their own spin and then pose for fashion photographer Chris Heads.

Chris has shot for Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair and also photographed one of my fave Glamazons Kelis (we spent a lot of time talking about how fun and stylish she is).

Anyway, of course, I jumped at the chance of sorting through racks and picking out my favorite Kmart pieces:

I love to colorblock (I did it here and here) so I went for a vibrant Jaclyn Smith blue blouse tucked underneath a fuschia Sofia by Sofia Vergara blazer. I anchored the look with my white flirty skirt and then I piled on the accessories: a pink and yellow Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez beaded bracelet and turquoise Jaclyn Smith color-block flats.

Now that I’m not working at The Magazine anymore and can do away with the all black uniform, I feel like I’m more colorful than ever. I’m just happier in bright colors.

I signed up and waited for my turn to pose for the camera alongside some of my favorite bloggers Makeda Saggau-Sackey, Christina Brown, Yoli Ouiya, Lorna Solano and more. We sipped champagne, laughed and ate cupcakes while we waited.

Finally, I went up to shoot. Though I was nervous at first (I felt very first day at “America’s Next Top Model”-ish), I eventually got into it and had fun with some of the props like this lounge chair:
