Reason #7691538 Not to Hoard: H&M Lets You Exchange Old Clothes for Discounts

Glamazons,

I have a problem. A first world problem, but a problem nonetheless. I am a hoarder.

This is only brought to my attention when it’s time to move; when my grandmother remarks on allllll the clothes I have and need to do away with; or recently, when my boyfriend made me watch an episode of “Hoarders” and expressed he’s fearful that one day I will turn a home into a 1500 square foot storage space for H&M dresses. Currently, there are two closets in my apartment, four clothing bins (two upstairs, two downstairs), two more closets at my parent’s house and three full dressers. If you think that sounds absolutely ridiculous, you’re right.

I’m pretty sure you’re wondering how a totally innocent, occasional frugal (bargain sales are my friend) shopping habit resulted in two houses full of clothes, and it’s simple.

I’ve been the same dress size since high school. I am obsessed with fast fashion and when clothes go out of style, I hold onto them swearing the trend will come back around. There’s also the nostalgic significance in my head (“I wore that dress to my college graduation so I have to keep it,” and the like) that makes it hard to part with random clothes from the 2000s. And the fact that I’m waiting to get back in shape to wear some of the cut-out dresses of my youth. Sigh.

Obviously, these are all (stupid) excuses. Something has to be done.

H&M is making it that much easier to stop hoarding through the latest program from their recycling initiative.

Starting in February, the fast fashion chain will offer a discount to anyone who brings in old clothes for recycling. Customers will get a discount of 15% on one (1) item of choice for placing bags of clothing in boxes at the cash wraps of every H&M store.

H&M promises to recycle the donated clothes and ultimately use them to create new clothes. H&M CEO Karl-Johan Persson said the following about the program: “Our sustainability efforts are rooted in a dedication to social and environmental responsibility. We want to do good for the environment, which is why we are now offering our customers a convenient solution: to be able to leave their worn out or defective garments with H&M.”

If you’re going to buy new clothes anyway, you might as well clear out some room in your closet — and get a decent discount in the process.

Would you donate old clothes to H&M and score a discount, Glamazons? Do you hoard? How do you stop yourself from hanging on to old clothes?

Kisses,

Glamazon Jessica

This article really touched me. I watch hoarders all the time, and even though I ridicule some of the people on the show (especially the ones who hoard trash, like really?) I feel sometimes that I'll be on the show for my clothes and shoes. Some of the items that I bought on sale/clearance are still in my closet, never been worn, with the tags still attached. Luckily, I have lots of cousins/family who love clothes as much as I do (handmedowns!) and my mom always does a lot of spring cleaning (I'm in college. Don't judge!). Either way, I know how you feel and YESSS I would definitely donate old clothes for discounts! H&M has some really cute items I'd love to grab in exchange for some stuff I'll never wear.
