Fall 2014 Trend Alert: The Most Feminine Plaid Pieces

We all have that one movie that sorta defines our youth. And growing up as a fashion-obsessed ’90s baby, mine was – you guessed it – Clueless! I wanted nothing more than to pluck a few fab pieces from Cher Horowitz‘s “grunge meets chic” wardrobe. I even tried (unsuccessfully) to recreate her look five Halloweens in a row – I know, I had it bad!

Although the cosmos never lined up for me to raid her virtual closet, the resurgence of the ever-popular plaid trend has finally given me an excuse to embrace the timeless tartan print.

As seen on the Fall 2014 runways, we can expect to see a bold, versatile take on the trend in the coming weeks.

But how do you try out the trend without looking like a lost school girl? Check out a few tips below:

1. Limit your patterns.

As to not complicate your overall look, don’t pair plaid with other dizzying prints. You really want your plaid piece to take centerstage with the rest of your look more toned down. Try to opt for a neutral or solid option and let the focus remain on your plaid staple.

2. Pick a flattering fit.

Take into consideration the fit of your plaid selection. Heavier fabrics such as wool or flannel, in comparison to cotton, can give that dreaded lumberjack appearance and really swallow your frame. I would avoid looser garments, especially in tops, to ultimately create a streamlined silhouette. You can further the illusion by tucking in your shirt or using a belt to cinch the waist.

3. Don’t be afraid to accessorize.

A great way to get your feet wet with a trend without going overboard is to opt for a few luxe accessories.
