Ask The Glamazons: Tips For Wearing Matte Lipstick

I love matte lipstick (and wear it religiously!) so I field a ton of questions about keeping it from drying, cracking, chafing and more. Fortunately, I’ve learned a few tips of the trade from wearing matte lipstick all the time. And of course, I’m sharing it with you (duh).

Here are a few tips for wearing matte lipstick:

PREP

-Exfoliate.

You want to start with a smooth surface as any cracks will show up once you apply your matte lipstick. You can use a lip scrub to get the job done or just lightly wet a toothbrush and brush it over your lips.

-Prime.

Since matte lipsticks can be especially drying, you should always use a primer before application. You can get fancy by buying an actual lip primer but I just use chapstick or the lightest coat ever of Vaseline.

APPLICATION

-Line.

A lip pencil makes all the difference. Your lipstick will look more polished and precise when you use a pencil, and it’s less likely to run or smudge.

-Teeth check!

Glamazon Andrea taught me this: to ensure there’s no lipstick on your teeth, put your finger in your mouth, press your lips over your finger and then slide your finger out. That helps remove the lipstick on the inside of your lips that can get on your teeth. Brills.

-Follow up with concealer.

Since I’m a stickler about my lipstick running (the horror!), I sometimes apply a light dab of concealer on my upper lip and brush along the top of my lip. It gets rid of any lipstick that may have ran and makes bright colors pop even more.

RE-UP

-Start from scratch.

If you notice your matte lipstick fading, wipe it off and re-apply from scratch. If you just add more lipstick to the original layer, it can start caking up and flaking.
