#NYFWCrawl: Braids, ‘Fros and Pompadours at Harlem’s Fashion Row with Design Essentials

Glamazons,

It goes without saying that Harlem’s Fashion Row is one of my favorite shows each season. Presented by Pandora and Prudential, HFR curated talented designers of color and gave them a well-deserved presence during New York Fashion Week.

Diandra Forrest walked the runway in a delightfully quirky look from Josh & Nicol

This season, I went backstage with Design Essentials and let me tell you: I was like a kid in a candy store! There were spectacular styles everywhere you turned: voluminous textured pompadours, milkmaid braids and sleek ponytails! I was running around snapping every look possible!

The preternaturally talented celebrity stylist, Keith Campbell, who I had the great privilege of speaking on a panel with years ago, walked us through each of the looks.

Here are the deets on Harlem’s Fashion Row Spring 2015 looks!

Byron Lars

Inspiration: “We did a pompadour focused on a lot of volume and texture and height,” Campbell said. “It’s very editorial and high fashion.”

Products Used To Get The Look: To create the avant-garde pompadours, Campbell’s team used Design Essentials® Sleek Max Edge Control to slick sides and Form Professional Holding Spray to keep the pompadour in place. I love that the products work on straight and curly textures!

K. Milele

Inspiration: “The inspiration behind the K. Milele line is very edgy and girly,” Campbell explained. “It’s about going against the grain, being unorthodox. So we did a milkmaid braid and fishtail braids to compliment the designs. We thought that it would go well with the personality of the girl. She’s tatted up, unique, someone you’re not typically going to see on the runway.”

Products Used To Get The Look: To keep the milkmaid braids, fishtail plaits and curly ‘fros hydrated, Campbell’s team used Design Essentials® Hydrience Argan Collection Moisturizing Creme and Design Essentials® Natural Curl Enhancing Mousse.

Harlem Haberdashery

Inspiration: For this collection, Campbell created “a low ponytail with a part down the middle because they wanted everything to be focused on the garment,” he said, adding: “The Design Essentials Sleek Max Edge Control has a nice soft hold which was great for the low ponytail.”

Products Used To Get The Look: To create the sleek center part ponytails, stylists used Design Essentials® Sleek Max Edge Control to keep edges in place and the Hydrience Argan Moisture Replenishing Mist to add shine and heat protection.

Josh & Nicol

Inspiration: The line’s chic coats and suiting called for over-the-top teased bouffants inspired by the elegant styles of the ’60s.

Products Used To Get The Look: Campbell‘s team achieved volume with products like Design Essentials® Honey & Shea Edge Tamer and Twist & Set Setting Lotion.
