In the fashion industry, there are several style-obsessed professionals that want to become a stylist, but few stylists who are truly successful. It takes a lot of business acumen, connections and of course, talent to distinguish yourself from the crowd.
Many readers approach me for advice on styling. It’s not what I’ve chose to base a career on (I cheated on my love, writing, with styling at The Magazine but in the end, I chose my love of words over photo shoots). But I’m happy to help aspiring stylists in any way I can.
The best way to find out the secret to styling success? Go to the source.
I had the opportunity to do just that in an interview with celebrity stylist Misa Hylton I penned for Black Enterprise. A veteran stylist who has been in the industry for over 18 years, Hylton has worked with celebrities like Diddy, Mary J. Blige and Kimora Lee Simmons and is launching a plus-size fashion line, Madison Star.
She gave me some amazing tips on breaking into the industry as a stylist. Here’s an excerpt:

-Relationships with designers and showrooms are vital. Develop relationships built on trust and respect.
