Confession: when it comes to the hair color arena, I’m a bit of a newbie–I’ve never dyed my hair! (Anyone else with me on this?) But after seeing these before ‘n after pics of my friend, Christie, who put Kimberly’s skills to work at the fabulous Ion Studio in NYC, I’m tempted to get into the game.
There’s something about warmer weather that makes people want to go lighter with their hair and Christie was definitely was on those eager for a sun-kissed look. Kimberly helped her go through a lookbook of blonde models to figure out what coloring would be best for her, which she says is muy importante to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page. They both had actress Michelle Williams’ color in mind–and with Christie’s newly cut pixie and fair skin, it seemed like a great fit:
Christie went from a brunette/dirty blonde to a super blonde in a few easy steps. If you haven’t gotten a dye job done before (like me!) and are curious about the process, it’s pretty straightforward. Kimberly decided to lift the base with a single process color:
Then she created balayage highlights (just a fancy term for naturalistic-looking highlights that help your hair grow out without obvious roots) to achieve step 2 of the desired baby blonde look. A trick they used to have the color penetrate fully is by wrapping the color with saran wrap instead of traditional foils:
Both dye process take about 30-45 minutes to apply and then another 30 minutes to let the color soak in, so be prepared to hang out at the salon for at least two hours if you’re doing a drastic color change like Christie did.
Can’t wait to see her “after” pic? I think the lighter color really brings out her blue/green eyes and a perfect transition into celebrating spring!
What do you think Glamazons? Have you dyed your hair recently or are planning to? What color? I’m thinking about going with Mandy Moore’s recent color change from a brunette to a red-ish tone (see below for a peek!):
