Lately, the smokey black eye has become my go-to beauty look for post-work social events. I can’t quite figure out why, but when I spied the gorgeous songstress Kelly Rowland rocking this smokey black eye shadow along with contoured cheeks and an understated nude lip, it was beauty lust at first sight. Believe it or not, Glamazons, this is a super-easy look to achieve! It’s all about layering and blending. Just follow these steps below and you’ll be rocking an onyx-inspired smokey eye look in 10 minutes or less!
#1. Apply a brown or black eye shadow base to the eye and blend it with your fingers. (Note that a cream base will help with the blending process and the brown base tones the look down a little.)
#2. Use the tip of your finger, blend the color up to your crease. A blending brush could be used, but I prefer to use my fingers when using a cream base. Make sure you blend the colors and keep the lines of the shadow nice and clean to avoid the “raccoon eye” look.
#3. Next, take a black eye shadow pencil and apply it to the bottom lash line covering about 1/ 3 of the lid. You can also use a black cream shadow or pigmented cream eyeliner.
#4. Use an eye shadow brush to pat the black eye shadow of your choice onto the lid starting from the lash line up to the crease. This is the part where you can have a little fun by using a matte shade or black shimmer on the lid!
#5. Take a blending brush and smooth out the black shadow for a clean finish.
#6. Add that same black shadow to the tip of your eye shadow brush and blend it into your lower lash line. You can use a smaller brush for a thinner line or if you need more control.
#7. Top off the look by adding a highlight color to the brow bone. Blend it down to the crease for a nice finish.
#8. Finish the look off by applying two coats of mascara.
