We all tuned in to this year’s VMA’s (or at least saw the pictures) and we all were talking about Nicki Minaj’s look. We all wanted to know what the heck was going on with the rapper’s multicolored hair and over-the-top attire! Well, Glamazons, it’s my duty to get you the answers. Nicki’s personal hairstylist Terrence Davidson dished all of the deets on the inspiration behind the look, how he creates a plethora of wigs for her, what we can exepect to see from this dynamic beauty duo in the future, and more!
GM: What inspired you to create the hairstyle Nicki wore for the VMA’s?
TD: Nicki loves Tokyo fashion and that was the inspiration behind this look. I just envisioned a hairstyle that I figured the world would embrace. It’s crazy how it all works out, I never speak to stylist or see her outfits until the day before or sometimes the day of the event but they always come together.
GM: How long did it take you to make it?
TD: I really do not know how much time it takes because I get so wrapped up in my creativity; by the time I finish I have completed a large selection of wigs for her to choose from.
GM: Nicki has been known for her creativity. Today some media outlets are calling her “weird” what word would you use to describe her look with your creations?
TD: If I had to choose 1 word it would have to be “Genius” and I wouldn’t never use the word “weird.” She is a true fashion icon.
GM: What is your secret to making these one-of-a-kind, trendsetting wigs?
TD: As a creator I just keep challenging the world to accept something different by letting them know that no shape, pattern or color is out of reach.
GM: My sources tell me that you hand dye each wig regardless of the detail and design. Is that true or is some of the hair already colored?
TD: Your sources are correct with a lot of my wigs but not all of them. Now, as for the wig she wore to the VMA’s; let’s just say that a magician never reveals all of his secrets.
GM: At the VMA’s Nicki thanked you. How did it feel to be an honorable mention?
TD: I missed it because I was back stage screaming. I was so excited for her that I didn’t even hear her say my name. But to be mentioned for my work was so overwhelming to me. I was in tears because she was so sincere and it is so rare for artists to acknowledge hairstylists for the work that they do and she made it known that she appreciated my work. I thank her for that daily because we are a team.
GM: What’s next for Terrence Davidson and Nicki Minaj?
TD: Well we just finished “Americas Got Talent”, Nicki is always busy and then I have a few surprise visits at cosmetology schools to reach out and touch the lives of people that have touched me through their letters of love and inspiration. Needless to say we will be busy.
Don’t you just love the way these two have a symbiotic relationship that just oozes creativity?!
Ciao Bellas,
Glamazon Margo
