Memorial Day Weekend came super fast! Or maybe that’s just me since I’ve been celebrating my birthday nonstop (more on this later) and feel like the month just flew by. Either way, it’s one of my favorite holidays first and foremost to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives defending the rights we often take for granted. And secondly because it marks the beginning of the most beautiful time of year: summer. I usually plan a trip for my birthday around this time with my girls.

I was supposed to spend the weekend in Kenya. With the recent terrorist attacks near the Somalian border, my family and I just didn’t feel comfortable with me traveling there this time (but I will get back to Africa if it’s the last thing I do). My blogger bestie Lexi made the trip to Kenya and will safely enjoy its many attractions like the safari, giraffe manor, elephant orphanage, Carnivore restaurant and more. Follow her adventures on her blog, Lexi With The Curls, and through the hashtag #KenyaCrawl on Twitter and Instagram. (I know I’ll be living vicariously…tear). In the meantime, I’ll be hanging out with my friends stateside and possibly hitting up a BBQ or two.

If you’re lucky enough to spend Memorial Day Weekend on the beach, go for free-flowing, breezy silhouettes that are perfect for a relaxing day of sand and sun. Maxi dresses, floppy hats and and flip flops are perfect for the occasion.

One of my favorite Memorial Day Weekend pastimes is hitting up a great cookout with my friends. Take advantage of this season’s layering trends by throwing a crochet vest over a crop top (or bandeau!) and shorts. Fun summer-themed flats add a unique and festive touch to your look.

Traveling by Plane
If you’re hitting a faraway destination, go for effortless pieces like a Boohoo maxi dress. Layer a jacket over your dress to keep you warm when the air conditioning is blasting.
