Glamazons,
I wish we didn’t need t-shirts like this but a day after The Justice Department announced it will close its investigation into Mike Brown’s killing, justice for our men, women and children is on my mind more than ever. Alongside the “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts that have become ubiquitous, Pyer Moss‘ They Have Names shirt is a powerful sartorial stand against police brutality.

Pyer Moss creative director, Kerby Jean-Raymond, created a shirt for himself bearing the names of male victims of police brutality including Eric Garner, Mike Brown and Oscar Grant. He designed it to raise awareness during New York Fashion Week with no intention of ever selling it but Shiona Turini, then the Fashion Market Director at Cosmopolitan, begged for the shirt off his back.
Shiona was photographed all over Fashion Week in the tee, and posted it on Intagram with the caption: “#TheyHaveNames. Thank you @pyermoss. I’m proud to honor the memory of these lost souls #justice #myblackisbeautiful #mymenarevaluable #saveoursons
The demand for the #TheyHaveNames shirt was so overwhelming that the brand teamed up with ACLU to produce 250 t-shirts to sell. They also introduced a new t-shirt with female victims like Aiyana Jones, Rekia Boyd and Tarika Wilson who don’t get nearly as much attention as they should.
The t-shirts retail for $70 each, and all proceeds will go to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Guys, I usually don’t spend $70 on t-shirts but given the message and the charity donation, this is so worth it to me. What about you, Glamazons? Would you pick up the Pyer Moss #TheyHaveNames t-shirt? Get it HERE.
Kisses,
Glamazon Jessica
