When you take good care of your natural hair, it shows. If you use the right products and maintain it, you’ll have a head full of healthy, soft and shiny hair. To get you (and me!) there, I chatted with celebrity hairstylist Oscar James about his fave CLEAR SCALP & HAIR™ products and hair maintenance tips over breakfast.
Total disclaimer: I was kind of stanning over him (and I’m so geeked for the prom pic we took above). He’s worked with such stars as Halle Berry, Iman, Vanessa Williams and Tyra Banks. And that makeunder we were raving about that made Nicki Minaj look as chic and sophisticated as ever? All him.
Obviously, I was too excited to pick his brain! Here’s what he dished:
-When detangling, it’s important to use the right conditioner (he recommends CLEAR SCALP & HAIR™ ULTRA SHEA Smooth & Nourish Conditioner). And don’t detangle your hair soaking wet; get excess water out of your hair so you don’t dilute the product.
-If your hair is tangling excessively, it’s time to get your ends trimmed!
-When applying conditioner, it’s a good practice to use moderate heat, whether under the dryer or with a heating cap, to seal it in.
-When straightening your natural hair, use the flat iron on a low setting (i.e. under or around 300 degrees) to avoid burning the hair shaft and causing significant heat damage.
-Don’t be afraid to try wigs and extensions! It’s a great protective style and it’s easy and versatile.
