New York Fashion Week: Nicole Miller Fall 2011 PLUS Coutura Chats with Gabrielle Union

Nicole Miller has created a niche for herself in young, chic fitted dresses with an edgy, downtown girl flair. Each season, she presents a slight modification on her signature look, never straying to far from the fray. For Fall 2011, the fresh twist materialized in abstract patterns, geometric necklines and vivid blue and red pops of color. The skin-tight minidresses, however, did not go anywhere.

In a season that embraced the Baroque period and tribal themes as inspiration, it was beyond refreshing to see Nicole’s wearable clothes. Pieces such as a sequined blazer and metallic skirt that grazed the knee did double duty, allowing the wearer to go from day to night with ease.

Coats were equally trendy, made with mixed material (faux fur and wool) and gathered with waist belts.

The look was decidedly casual and downtown: sporty chic with a young, glamorous flair. Layers added to the effortless look, with turtlenecks peeking out under dresses and skirts worn over pants.

Gabrielle Union and Taraji P. Henson were clearly enraptured by the collection in the front row, and Gabby even made time to chat with me about the new collection! She’s so sweet every time I see her.

Wearing a Nicole Miller jumpsuit, she gushed about the designer saying “You know some designers make you feel like their designs aren’t for everyone. She designs for real women with real budgets, and makes fashion inclusive.”

Amen! If this Fall collection is any indication, real women will be clamoring to add Nicole Miller to their wardrobe this Fall. What do you think of the looks?
