New York Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Vena Cava Fall 2011 Show

So, as you well know, Coutura and I have been all over the place due to the fact that Fashion Week is here yet again. After watching that BCBG Max Azria show from the American Express SkyBox (my first time to do so and I’m now obsessed with trying to watch all of the shows from this location! so posh…) I ran off in my peep toe booties with my bestie Elaine (from EBONY) to get the backstage beauty scoop at Vena Cava. (Side note: Wearing peep toe booties with only tights to cover the opening is not a good idea in 20 degree weather so I will be sure to never do it again. Also, why in the heck is MILK Studios so far away from Lincoln Center?! Someone feel free to sponsor us for NY Fashion Week car service…sigh)

After waiting 20 minutes for the elevator to take us to the 2nd floor (Side note: I know..dumb! Why we didn’t take the stairs is beyond me. It may have been because we were way too frozen to think straight by the time we got inside. I’m thinking that it was most likely because we were busy preening over this woman next to us who had on this gigantic white fur jacket that looked positively amazing!) we ran backstage just in time to catch up with head celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson. Never one at a loss for words and with some concoction of hair product smeared all over his hands, he shared with us that the inspiration for the look was one of a “downtown girl that hasn’t shampooed her hair in days…almost weeks.”

“She’s kind of nasty but chic at the same time,” he said. ” It’s almost like the 90’s grunge look. It looks really wet but it’s not really wet.”

Nasty chic. Now that’s definitely some lingo that I can get down with. To create the look, Ted said he combined together his Fix It Styling Gel and the Tame It Styling Gel.

Over in makeup, I ran into my most favorite MAC makeup artist ever Keri B. and paused to take this awesome picture with her. I think I must have paused a little bit too long because I didn’t get to chat one-on-one with the head makeup artist (oops!) so I had to get the scoop later. Here’s what head makeup artist Christian McCulloch had to say about the makeup look he created:

“It’s a bit french and a bit rock ‘n roll….greasy, sexy and cool. Makeup is the accessory, the perfect jewel..playful but chic.”

Nevermind all that, what was up with all that glitter smeared all over the models’ eyes?! Is it a bad thing that I not only liked it but immediately thought back to my hipster, glitter-all-over-my-body wearing days when I lived in Brooklyn? (Yes, I was prone to roll around in glitter while dancing at house parties…so what?!)

Here’s how the makeup artists created this look (according to the tip sheet, of course):

-Blend MAC Pro Glitters in Silver, 3-D Silver and Reflects Purple Duo

-Apply MAC Pro Shine Mixing Medium over the eyelide and through the lower lashes for a smoky, show-stopping effect

-Make sure brooms are groomed upwards with a clear brow set.
