Hey Glamazons! First off, let me start off by wishing all of the moms out there a very Happy Mother’s Day. While I don’t have any kids of my own (and probably won’t for a very long time considering the fact that the shortage of men here in NYC that just don’t meet my criteria for baby’s daddy material) I must admit that I have tons of respect for the whole idea of motherhood.
While we’re on the topics of mothers (because it is Mother’s Day hence the whole reason I’m writing this post) I just wanted to introduce you to my own mom, Shirley Jean. (Side note: Yes, that’s her real name. I did tell you that I’m from a country town in Texas, right?! I know, I can hardly believe it most days myself! Ugh.) Growing up, I was pretty much a tomboy and much to my mother’s chagrin, I’d rather jump off of bales of hay and play around in the mud rather than sit still and pretend to be a dainty lady. My mother sold Avon back then (and still does!) so I was always around beauty products and while I appreciated their look, smell and feel I wasn’t really interested in wearing any of it.
Never one to leave the house or go to work without her makeup on, I remember watching my mother apply this Avon makeup to her face day in and day out, so I’m sure that’s why it was imprinted on my brain that I should wear makeup before leaving the house as well. I was always a very active little girl, so my mother would put me in whatever extracurricular activities she could manage. (Granted most of these activities forced me to be around other dainty girls, but I never really noticed this until later in life.)
One of these activities included dance class (which I loved!) and as part of this I’d have recitals every couple of weeks. This was my mother’s chance to slather my face with her Avon makeup (think Tiaras and Tots but not as scary). As you can see from the photo above, she was big on blush. It wasn’t until late in college that I started to really wear makeup and even then it was only tinted moisturizer from Clinique and MAC lipgloss.
Now that I’m older, I wear makeup all of the time (including blush!) and I love it! I’d have to say that I owe all of my love for beauty products to my dear mother because she somehow managed to seep her love for them into me..and it’s definitely not a bad thing!
What are some beauty lessons that you’ve learned from your mother?
xoxo
