Happy Wednesday, Glamazons! As a midweek treat, we’re answering one fab Glamazons’s question from our Formspring page: “How do I get healthy hair?”
This question is somewhat complex to answer because we all have different types of hair so what works for your best friend might not necessarily work for you. Fortunately, there are a few basic things that we all can do to help get (or stay) on the right track toward healthy hair.
1. Eat healthy, drink lots of water and exercise
Your hair needs proper nutrition just like your body does! If you eat a poor diet, expect to have fragile, brittle hair. There are several vitamins that enhance the overall look, feel and state of your hair such as Vitamins A, B, C , D and E as well as minerals such as calcium, zinc and iron. Foods like whole grains, fruits, nuts, fish should be mainstays within your meal plan. Hydrate your body! Not only does water help skin look supple and refreshed but it’s also good for the hair!
2. Limit your heat use
One of the easiest ways to damage your hair is with excessive heat styling. You don’t have to stop using heat completely but try to use the lowest possible heat setting on your styling tools and always use heat protectant. Avoid using heat daily and try heat-free styles such as a high bun (which is super-trendy right now) or a fun braided hairstyle.
3. Keep it clean
Filthy hair is a beauty faux-pas. Don’t get me wrong, I love when my hair’s a few day post-wash and it hold curls like nobody’s business but if it starts smelling funky and gets itchy from product build-up, it’s time for a wash! Most people don’t go a day without showering (let alone weeks) so why would you do that with your hair? You don’t have to wash it everyday but you should at least a couple of times every 7-10 days.
4. Get over your fear of using oil
Oil can be used on all hair types and using it should be in your hair regime. There’s a difference between using oil vs. grease on tresses. There are actually several lightweight oils that are lifesavers for protecting hair from damage or restoring damaged hair to a healthy state.
I love to pre-poo my hair by applying olive oil and letting it sit for 20 minutes (or overnight) to moisturize my hair and lock in some of the natural oils (that the scalp produces) that shampoo could strips from your hair. Moroccan oil and coconut oil are also favorites to use as heat protectant and lightweight shine serums. Remember don’t use too much. A little bit goes a long way.

5. Don’t forget about your ends
Many times proper haircare is focused on treating the scalp. While this is pivotal to our hair’s health, it’s also important to remember to care your hair from root-to-tip. Also, remember to get a trim at least every 6 to 8 weeks to rid hair of split ends. Your stronger, longer tresses will thank you in the long-run.
