My mother taught me so much about style but the lesson I treasure most? Mommy taught me the importance of discovering and embracing your personal style. Instead of following trends, my Mother always dressed according to her own rules. She would show off her unique fashion sense (you’ll never catch my Mom without a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry) and choose pieces that accentuate her frame. For Mom, fashion was about standing out instead of blending in with the crowd and even today, I find myself adding a special twist to my outfit just like she does.

The best tip my mother ever gave me is kind of unspoken. She always wore this deep, cherry red lipstick from AVON called Cherry Jubilee and never left the house without applying her makeup. Because of this, I do the same (ie. not leave the house without applying my makeup). Granted, I slightly differ from her in that I rarely wear lipstick (I’m more of a lip gloss gal) but her love of cosmetics definitely leaked over to me. Side note: I really should be committed due to the amount of makeup that I have smh.

My mother taught me: Spend as much time on your head as you do your outfit–your look means nothing if there isn’t anything to back it up.

The best style advice she gave me was that there’s a difference between simplicity and plain. When I thought that I had to wear the most colorful (and sometimes just plain gaudy) pieces to stand out, she showed me how chic a little black dress with gorgeous jewelry and fabulous shoes can be. She taught me how to look like and be a sophisticated lady.
