The emoji representation struggle has been real, right? It felt like we waited forever just to get emojis with different complexions (which I use…obsessively). We always wanted curly hair emojis too. In fact, Dove commissioned a study led by Sali A. Tagliamonte, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Toronto, and found that “80% of women and girls with curly hair feel existing emojis underrepresent their hair type.” So of course, they stepped up to the plate and created the first-ever curly hair emojis!
The Dove Love Your Curls emojis (a collab with Snaps marketing platform) offer 27 curly hair designs and seven animated GIFs, making 131 emojis in total.
I immediately found some emojis that looked like me and was as happy as a kid in a candy, erm, app store. A variety of complexions, textures and colors are represented from dark-skinned beauties to gorgeous redheads.

I love that the Dove team continues to champion diversity. When we worked with them for our #NOLACrawl Style Suite Event, we took into account their genuine commitment to celebrate every texture, not just to sell products (though their Dove Quench Absolute Styling Creme IS amazing) but to truly make a difference.
They’re passionate about it and put so much time and effort into creating new forms of representation for curly girls. This emoji project, like their Love Your Curls illustration book, is another step toward fulfilling that mission. I’m so excited to spread the word about these emojis and use them all the time.

And whenever you post #LoveYourCurls on Twitter, a custom Dove Curly Emoji will auto-generate within the tweet (just like you may have noticed Twitter does for #Empire and #Scandal).
