Essence Magazine has tapped Constance C.R. White as the new Editor-in-Chief, reports WWD. White, who most recently served as eBay style director, brings years of experience from her roles as founding fashion editor at Talk Magazine, style reporter at The New York Times and executive fashion editor at Elle Magazine.
She has been featured as a style expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show, E! Fashion File and Project Runway, and her written work has appeared in British Vogue, People Magazine, Essence Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily and The Chicago Tribune. She also authored “Stylenoir,” a brilliant book about black style.
Her appointment follows the succession of Angela Burt-Murray who is said to have retired to live in Atlanta with her family but is rumored to be heading Huffington Post’s new site, Huffington Post GlobalBlack. [Update: Burt-Murray is now out at Huffington Post GlobalBlack.]
Essence Magazine has endured a string of negative press with controversial covers (Reggie Bush, Kim Porter and Diddy to name a few) and the appointment of a white Fashion Director which led to a protest in September of 2010. Having met Constance White, I am hopeful she can turn the book’s reputation around and win back the many subscribers and readers who have given up on the brand.
What’s your opinion? Do you think Constance White is a good choice for Editor-in-Chief?

I love this! I respect her work in the publishing world and think she will bring a different perspective to Essence. I think she'll bring a focus that is less fad-based and more down home chic. I wonder what happened that Angela Burt-Murray left The Huffing Post so quickly, though..
Thanks for all your efforts that you have put in this. very interesting information.
