Glamazons,

It’s no secret that we love Tracee Ellis Ross around these parts. Her hair alone gives me an abundance of life. In addition to her glorious mane, what I personally admire about the talented actress is how comfortable she seems in her skin. She is funny, stylish and her confidence is contagious — she’s a definite contender for celebrity friend in my head! So you can just imagine how excited I was to go to a private screening of her new ABC show Black-ish at the 40/40 club in NYC.

Tracee was interviewed by social media personality Chescaleigh and the pair had such great chemistry. I don’t want to give too much away about the series (no spoilers here) but I will tell you one thing for sure: you will laugh to your heart’s content!

Here are my top 3 reasons you should check out “Black-ish” when it debuts:

1. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

I will be extremely honest here, Glamazons: when I first heard the title of the show Blackish, I was slightly confused. And I’m not alone. A quick click on the hashtag #Blackish showed that other folks didn’t understand either. One user went to so far as to call it racist!

Tracee broke it down at the screening in a way that makes perfect sense. She said: “In terms of the title of the show, it’s about a black family dealing with their -ish. It’s as simple as that. It’s also an opportunity to see that the “ish” for all of us is the same. And the other thing I love about the show is that a lot of times when you’re on network television, you play an actor who happens to black but this is a show about a black family, we’re not shying away from the fact that we’re a black family.”

2. It addresses the complexity of race head-on.

Even though the show is about a black family, there are certain nuisances that are cleverly addressed. It’s not often we get to see a woman of color identify as mixed on primetime television. On Blackish, they embrace what it means to be black, and biracial, and to be immersed in African-American culture. By discussing race, even in a comedic way, it ceases to be taboo.

3. It’s Hilar!

Tracee said it best at the screening. “It’s a comedy. We are not trying to change lives and we are not trying to fix slavery. We’re making people laugh.” And that you will!

After the screeningm I got a chance to take a picture with Tracee and of course, her hair took the spotlight. Don’t you just love that we’re both wearing white after Labor Day? Such fashion rebels. She was wearing all Topshop and my jumpsuit is from Zara!
