#GlamazonsFitness: I Got My Life (and a Great Workout) at Hip Hop Spin! @TheVibeRide

Glamazons,

Am I the only one who thought spin class was super intense…and dare I say it, frightening? I’d walk by spin classes at the gym and see people bent over their bikes pedaling furiously with furrowed brows and buckets of sweat, and I thought it looked akin to torture. It didn’t help that my co-worker at The Magazine said that she imagines someone kidnapping her daughter and chases them on her bike to get through spin class. Like, whet?! Nevertheless, when Lexi With The Curls asked me to go to hip hop spin, I agreed largely due to a video I saw online of people spinning and bopping to my favorite song “Blow The Whistle.” It looked like a great — and yes, intense — workout but also, FUN!

I walked into The Vibe Ride in Atlanta not knowing exactly what to expect but excited for a new experience. The first class is free for newcomers and the receptionists were super-friendly and welcoming to a spin newbie like myself. They offered customized sneakers that snap onto the pedals and I regret not getting them (my sneakers kept slipping off!). But I DID get water and boy, did it come handy!

The first thing I noticed upon walking into the class is the club lighting: dim with the occasional colorful strobe light. It definitely felt like a nightclub. The music followed suit: blaring dance party anthems like “Get Low” and “Hot in Here” with the base turned up. But the party vibes didn’t take away from the actual workout! In fact, they made me go harder. When the hook to “Never Scared,” came on and we were instructed to stand up while pedaling and then bend over the handle bars and jerk our torso back up to the tune of the beat, it felt like we were dancing. That helped me push through the last couple of reps without slowing down or slacking.

Check out a Snapchat video of me in action at spin class (and add me! @DressUpWithJess):

I also found motivation in my spin instructor, Derry Stapleton. He yelled at us throughout the class and at one point, he even started a song over when we weren’t giving it our all. He pushed me to the point where I felt my legs were going to fall off, but afterwards, I felt amazing and thanked him for the great workout. There were even a couple times when we clapped after a song because the workout was so good.

I’m officially a fan of spin. It’s a great way to slim down (look how much we were sweating!) with cardio but it also tones your core and legs. But I’m partial to hip hop spin — the music and a great instructor add to the experience and motivate me to get through the workout (no, imaginary kidnappings necessary LOL).

Would you guys try hip hop spin? Have you done it before? What was your experience? Would love to hear from you in the comments!
