10 Minutes with Celebrity Hairstylist Voneva Denham!

Glamazons, isn’t it the best when you have a girlfriend who’s over-the-top, but in a good way? You know, someone who’s willing to try a trend at least once and who walks to the beat of her own glammy drum? I instantly discovered these personality traits when I got the opportunity to interview the oh-so-fabulous celebrity hairstylist and glamour specialist Voneva Denham aka VonevaGlam while she was en route to a photoshoot in Atlanta. The glam-queen has worked with the cast of the hit BET series “The Game” and has also showcased her talents on “The Janice Dickenson Modeling Agency,” as well as one of my fav TV channels, TLC. Check out what she had to say about what it’s like to work in the entertainment business, her amazing non-profit organization, and the Spring/Summer  2012 season’s hottest hair trends.

GM: When did you know you wanted to work in beauty and entertainment?

VG: I’ve always been into music and entertainment. I grew up in the church, and started singing when I was five. In middle school and high school I really got into hair by doing my friends’ hair and coloring and messing up my own hair! (laughs) I always had the drive and passion for it, and always knew hair is what I wanted to do.

GM: How did you get your foot in the door as far as becoming a celebrity hairstylist?

VG: I started behind the chair. I did photo shoots, and a music video with a friend who was a wardrobe stylist., and I got other commercial jobs from there.

GM: How long have you been in the business of glam?

VG: I’ve been working as a hairstylist for 8 years and I love it. It allows me to enjoy the creative process.

GM: Speaking of glam, what hair trends are hot for Fall?

VG:  Effortless, unpolished hair! We’ll see a lot of messy side braids and messy buns . Also, ombre hair. It’s a trend from last year, but it’s recently popping up everywhere. Dirtier ombre colors will be hot, like ashy blonde and black and red red and black. Jet black hair with a nice tan will also be hot. Even a blue-black color would be great! There are no rules in beauty, especially when it comes to creative expression.

GM: You specialize in weaving and non-surgical hair replacement, what does the hair replacement process entail?

VG: This is for clients who suffer from alopecia or baldness. There’s no surgical transplant, I make custom hair pieces. Some are bonded on a cap, and some are sewn.

GM: Why did you choose this as a highlighted specialization?

VG:  I was able to see how it impacted people’s lives as a whole. Some women inherit baldness from their fathers, and others from medical reasons. I’ve never been bald, and weave is a great accessory, and I choose to wear it, but some of them don’t have a choice.

GM: What are some of your go-to hair care products?

VG:

M: You seem like such a well-rounded person. I bet you have an impeccable fashion sense. What are some of your favorite Spring/Summer 2012 fashion trends?

VG: I do have an eye for fashion. I’m a beauty and glamour person overall. I love the idea of anything glamorous! I’m into color-blocking and I love neon colors. I’m a neon fanatic.

GM: Finish this sentence…if I wasn’t working in beauty and entertaninmet, I would probably be…

VG:  I can’t even think like that! I would probably be some type of political activist because I reallu so love my non-profit.

GM: Tell me more about your non-profit Glam For Life. Why is this movement so important to you?

VG:  In 2007 my mom died by suicide and my mom’s mom died of suicide, so I’m a third-generation suicide survivor. It’s a real issue and epidemic, especially in the black community. I host a lot of conferences and have speaking engagements and workshops with the goal to prevent the disparity and inform people about culturally sensitive therapists and resources.

Stylish, with a warm heart- isn’t she awesome, Glamazons? Make sure you check out her website to see what else VonevaGlam’s up to!
