5 (Easy!) Ways To Keep Lips Moisturized During The Winter

Hey Glamazons! The winter chill is definitely here (brrrr!!!) and hopefully all of our East Coast readers are snug, safe and sound in their homes while #Juno rages on. Side note: I’m totally being sarcastic here. There’s no more blizzard. Woo hoo!!! Everyone (including weather.com) was wrong! While you may be at home now, we’re sure that you’re going to eventually venture out into the freezing weather. It’s important to make sure that you are taking good care of your skin this winter. One of the most forgotten places? Your lips.  Not only can dry lips be painful, but we’re also pretty sure that no one likes them. Here are 5 ways to keep your lips moisturized during the long, winter season:

1. Sleep with a humidifier near your bed at night. There is such a thing as too much heat! A lot of the apartment buildings in the city can crank out heat like no other. Not that we’re complaining (it’s great to stay warm!), but all of that heat can wreak havoc on your skin + lips. Sleeping with a humidifier on at night will help to keep both moisturized. It’s also a great idea to slather a moisturizing balm such as those from the Rosebud Perfume Co. before you fall asleep each night, too!

2. Avoid the licks. This is something that can be super tricky to do (especially if you have a habit of it), but try to avoid licking your lips whenever possible. Instead of adding moisture, it just dries them out even more. Your saliva contains acids used to digest your food that can easily irritate your lips as well as deplete natural oils.

3. Don’t pick. When your lips get flaky, the first thing you’re prone to do is to pick off the flakes. Why? Well, not only because it’s gross but also because it just further irritates your lips. Instead, try exfoliating. I love the BLISS fabulips sugar lip scrub. Not only does exfoliating keep your lips nice and soft, but this will also help them to retain moisture. Afterwards, rub on some Aloe Vera. It will help to relieve any pain/burning your lips may have experienced while dry.

4. Lip balms are the devil. Ok, not really the devil, per se, but when it comes to keeping much needed moisture in your lips, they aren’t very effective when it comes to healing chapped lips. It’s best to stick with balms instead of waxes. Also, try to find balms that contain good-for-your-lips  ingredients such as Shea Butter. We love the L’Occitane Shea Butter Lip Balm Stick. If you’re more of a lipstick girl, avoid using matte formulas as they can be drying (if you must, be sure to dap on some lip balm underneath!). Try using lipsticks that contain conditioning ingredients such as Vitamin E, Macadamia Oil and Shea Butter. The Maybelline Color Sensational collection is amazing!

5. Protect your lips from the wind by wrapping with a scarf. The cold, winter winds can dry out your lips like no other! #THEWORST Try wrapping your scarf around your mouth. Before I hit the outdoors, I slather on a bit of petroleum jelly (like the Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter) to try and prevent the dreaded lip dry out.

What are some ways you like to keep your lips moisturized, Glamazons?
