How To Style Over The Knee Boots

Glamazons, Nicole F. wrote in asking how to wear over the knee boots and not look like a streetwalker. LOL! It’s a hilarious question but a valid one. Over the knee boots are typically considered risqué and overtly sexy, but there are ways to wear them so they actually look understated and chic. If you’re also wondering how to style over the knee boots, the key is all about nailing contrast.

Complement the boots out with looser silhouettes, higher necklines, and lower hemlines so you create the perfect balance. Go for the unexpected, which means instead of a mini skirt or a fitted top, try something you’d normally pair with ankle boots or even sneakers instead. The surprising addition of over the knee boots will take your outfit to an entirely different level.

You don’t have to stick with basic black, either. Some of my favorite styles are bold in color and pattern. Think red, snakeskin, color blocking, stripes, and the list goes on. For a vibrant pair of over the knee boots, you can also temper the look with neutral tones and solid-colored clothing. Ready to master this styling strategy in your wardrobe?

Check out 4 tips on how to style over the knee boots below:

1. Make sure your hem falls right above the boots.

For a chic and pulled-together look, wear a skirt or dress with a longer hem so only a small part of your leg or just the top of the boots is visible. This tones down the sex appeal of a mini skirt and gives you a streamlined silhouette.

2. Pair your over the knee boots with a loose-fitting top for a chic contrast.

Create the perfect balance with an oversize, flowing top that complements your fitted footwear.

3. Balance the sexiness of the boots with a high neckline.

A high neckline not only elongates your frame, but it looks super polished and pulled-together styled with your boots. A turtleneck or a high-collared dress, like the one above, will do the trick.

4. Go for a monochrome look on the bottom.

Monochrome makes everything better, and black-on-black is especially chic and understated. Whether you’re wearing black tights or denim, you can easily nail this look and dress it up or down.

Do you mean over the knee boots? You’re wearing knee highs but the women are wearing OTKs (nobody calls them thigh highs anymore). Where I live every woman and their grandmother wear knee high boots and still look classy. Over the knee boots are another animal entirely. Anyone can look classy in OTK boots as long as you stay away from the wide-top patent leather Pretty Woman boots. And stay away from wild prints and very bright colors. Case in point:

I actually think these tips apply to both knee-high boots and OTKs — but putting both makes the headline a little too long LOL. And totally agree that patent leather, wild prints and bright color boots are def Pretty Woman-territory! xo!
