GET THE LOOK: Janelle Monae’s Glam Covergirl Makeup at Essence Festival #NolaCrawl

Glamazons,

Janelle Monae shut down the mainstage at Essence Music Festival with a dynamic, high-spirited performance! And she had gorgeous makeup to match. I know, I know: that’s not surprising since the Covergirl spokesbeauty is known for her flawless skin, full lashes and bold lip but there was something extra special about Friday.

On July 4th, the day of Janelle and Prince‘s performance, Covergirl ambassador Sam Fine worked his magic on Janelle‘s face (Sidenote: he did my makeup too! Squeal! More on that here). The result was pure perfection, and we’ve got the deets on how to recreate her look straight from Sam Fine. Check it out!

2014 Essence Music Festival - Day 2

Inspiration:

Janelle is known for having great style and wearing classic black/white clothing… and a signature red lip. It’s always my goal to bring something new to each face without changing or challenging the client’s personal style. So, I placed my focus on skin, lashes and lips!”

Face:

1. Janelle’s skin is fantastic, so I used two shades of truBLEND Foundation – one to highlight the under eye area and the other to match her complexion perfectly! I barely used any powder because truBLEND dries down to a powdery finish and I really wanted to maintain a “second-skin” effect.

2. I love enhancing skin with bronzer, so the next product I selected from my makeup arsenal was Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer. I applied it to the outer perimeter of the face (forehead, cheeks, etc.), which provides dimension, contour and a soft, subtle glow.

Eyes:

1. I kept the eyes simple, yet defined. Using Bombshell Intensity Liner in black, I drew a thick line that winged out to elongate the eye, then topped it off by adding false lashes and a few coats of Clump Crusher by LashBlast mascara to both top and bottom lashes.

Lips:

1. Janelle’s signature red lip is the perfect accent to this classic look. First I applied LipPerfection Lipcolor in Hot, then topped it off with a dab of Colorlicious Lipgloss in Sweet Strawberry for dimension and shine.

I know what you’re thinking: we can’t all be as masterful at applying makeup as Sam Fine but this look is fairly easy to try at home.

I’m giving it a whirl (since it incorporates all my favorite things: bronzer, lashes and lip!). Would you try it out? Tell me in the comments. And check out more posts from my #NolaCrawl including the fab day party I attended with Covergirl and Common here.
