A Day in The Life: “Being Mary Jane” Screening PLUS 3 Reasons You’ll Love It!

Glamazons,

When actress Gabrielle Union proudly proclaims that her new BET show ‘Being Mary Jane‘ is “unlike anything you have seen on television,” believe it. It is my new obsession.

I was recently invited to preview the electric first episode from the movie-turned-TV series brought to you by the beautiful Mara Brock Akil and I have to be completely honest with you: I was BLOWN away. The show is full of humor, charisma, lots of sexiness and wait for it: good ole fashioned drama.

The screening party was held by BET and Essence Magazine and the premise was to celebrate Gabby‘s gorgeous Essence cover and of course, her brand spanking new TV series.

The good folks at Viacom were the gracious hosts for the night and they made sure the small intimate crowd had tasty treats to munch on and delicious drinks to quench our thirst.

Don’t worry, there are no spoilers but I just have to give you 3 solid reasons as to why tell you why you should be glued to your screens tonight (Jan 7th) when the series premieres!

1. The Characters

The show’s characters are incredibly rich and diverse with many unbelievable and sensational layers. For instance, Gabby‘s character Mary Jane is an accomplished professional who is involved in a complex and uber messy love triangle that will have Glamazons all over the globe sitting on the edge of their seats.

There was one point that I literally wanted to take my shoes off and throw it at Mary Jane. Trust me when I tell you that MJ and her friends/ family cease to become fictional characters and they will absolutely leap from the TV screens and into your heart.

2. The Music

You have to love the way the producers make use of the music in the show. Just the promo music alone had me searching frantically on the internet for the name of the artist singing in the above clip (by the way, my search led me to YouTube and “Note To Self” is my new jam by Marc Dold feat Coleen McCahon). Glamazons, you know how the soundtracks to TV and film can make or break the emotion being conveyed in a particular scene? In this first episode, they nailed it.

3. Mara’s Commitment To Telling Our Stories

What I love the most about the show is that we get to see interesting black women on TV in leading roles. Remember how at the Black Girls Rock! show a few months ago, shot caller Mara Brock Akil gave an inspirational speech and confidently assured black girls, “I see you even when no one else does.” She meant it. She walks the walk and and her commitment to telling our girlfriends, sisters, Auntie’s and Mom’s stories with such depth and sensitivity is beyond amazing.

You will cry, laugh and everything in between when you see the show. But above all, you will see a bit of yourself in it. You’ve been warned, gear up for a fun but emotional roller coaster. My only gripe? There are only 8 episodes in the first season! *prays to Viacom Gods for more*
