Glamazon Guide: Leather in the Summer? Here’s How To Nail It

Glamazons,

Whenever I think of leather in the summer, the scene in “Waiting To Exhale” comes to mind when Lela Rochon‘s character, Robin, dumps her man. She famously makes fun of him for wearing leather “in the summertime” because he shows up to her house, late, shirtless with a leather vest. Eew.

Robin was right to leave her boyfriend but she was wrong about leather in the summer. Seriously. It’s not all bad. In fact, it was a pretty huge trend this season as reader Kristen smartly identified.

Kristen commented on this post about Kelly Rowland’s leather look, writing:

“love Kelly’s look! any more tips for wearing leather in the summer? thanks!!!”

Sure thing! Here are five tips plus glamspiration from our favorite style mavens. Read on.

1. Rock one small leather piece.

Leather is like a second skin, and it can be pretty abrasive in the heat if you don’t wear it in moderation. For summer, a pair of leather shorts, a crop top or a flirty skirt will give your skin room to breathe.

2. Wear loose silhouettes.

Speaking of flirty skirts, leather material in looser silhouettes will keep you cool during the summer. Dresses with A-line shapes and pleated skirts are breezy and airy enough for scorching temperatures. The more a leather piece flares away from the body (as opposed to clinging to it), the better. Also, stay away from heavy leather pieces and look for soft, lightweight finds.

3. Pair it with breezy items.

Leather should always be paired with the lightest of materials to keep things summery. Think leather shorts with sheer blouses or leather tops with flowy, chiffon skirts. Bonus? The juxtaposition of tough leather with dainty, delicate materials is very trendy and stylish.

4. Lighten up the colors.

Though most leather pieces come in black, it isn’t the most summery hue. Opt for leather pieces in light colors like pastels, white, cream, mint or beige to brighten up your look.

5. Go for pieces with ventilation.

A little ventilation goes a long way when you’re rocking leather. Leather dresses with cut-outs or skirts with laser-cut designs will keep you from burning up in the heat.
