Glamazon Guide: How To Reverse Heat Damage in Natural Hair With Tips from Ursula Stephen

Glamazons,

You guys know I recently went from curly to straight with the help of Motions Straight Finish. I told you I was initially concerned before I tried the products because I wondered if my hair would bounce back (i.e. revert to its curly state with little damage done to my curl pattern). I was lucky after using the products that my curls were back to normal and as springy as ever.

But I haven’t always been so fortunate. When I wore a wavy weave last summer, I flat ironed the front of my hair so often that it never curls up quite like the rest of my hair. Uggggghhh! Sorry, but that’s the level of frustration that one random strand of loose curls always causes.

Have you been there?

So many naturals I talk to complain about heat damage, but the good news is it’s not the end of the world for your once springy curls.

I spoke with Ursula Stephen, Rihanna and Michelle Williams‘ hairstylist and owner of Ursula Stephen: The Salon about some ways to reverse heat damage in natural hair:

1. Moisturize

“Curly hair textures are fragile so for natural girls that have been a bit too extreme with heat and are noticing signs of damage, you need to moisturize,” Ursula says. “I recommend leave-in conditioners or deep conditioning treatments that your hair can absorb.”

Ursula loves “Motions Deep Conditioning Masque for natural textures. Shea butter, coconut oil and avocado oil are packed in this product and for only $6, you can load it on and use it often.” Get the Motions Deep Conditioning Masque here.

2. Step away from the heat!

“Lay off the heat for a while,” Ursula warns naturals who want to reverse heat damage. Instead of using a blow dryer or sitting under a dryer to style your tresses, she suggests to “let your hair air dry.”

3. Always use a heat protectant.

“If you must [use heat], make sure you’re using a heat protectant before heat styling.” Ursula recommends Motions Straight Finish: “After one wash, you bounce right back to your curls and, in my experience, less heat is required to straighten the hair when you use all three Motions Straight Finish products together.” Pick up the Motions Straight Finish cleanser here, conditioner here and sealer here.

What’s your experience been with heat damage, Glamazons? Were you able to reverse it? Are you still struggling with it? Scared to straighten your hair because of it? Tell me in the comments.

Kisses,

Glamazon Jessica
