Kanye West vs. PETA: A Short History
Glamazons, we’ve been playing Kanye West‘s Theraflu over and over again all weekend just to dissect every diss (you can’t examine all the shade with just one listen). We’ve addressed Kanye’s confession of love for Kim Kardashian and his jab toward ex-husband Kris Humphries. But what about this antagonistic line: “Tell PETA my mink is dragging on the floor.”
Oh, the cockiness and utter disrespect! PETA usually does the confronting and now, Kanye is baiting them on wax. Of course, PETA responded, setting the stage for what undoubtedly will be a regrettable (yet entertaining) fashion conflict of epic proportions. But this is not the beginning of PETA and Kanye West bumping heads.
Let’s look at a timeline of their battle, shall we?
PETA started the drama off by listing him as one of the Worst-Dressed celebrities of 2009 saying he deserves a “lifetime bereavement award” for “the corpses in his closet.” What’s beef?
The following January, Kanye West and then-girlfriend Amber Rose were spotted in Paris in matching long fur coats dragging on the floor.
PETA did not take kindly to their fashion statement and released an inflammatory letter to that effect. Quoting Kanye‘s “All Falls Down” lyrics ["Prettiest people do the ugliest things on the road to riches and diamond rings...things we buy to cover up what's inside"], they called ‘Ye out for being a hypocrite…and of course threw in plenty of jabs, even calling Amber Rose “sleazy“:
West apparently lives by his lyrics. The ethical dropout—who horrified voters in PETA’s Worst-Dressed Celebrity competition last year—and his sleazy sidekick, Amber Rose, were snapped by paparazzi strutting around Paris in “the ugliest things,” indeed. Both were wearing head-to-toe fur, and Amber refused to remove her full-length lynx coat during a show at Paris Men’s Fashion Week.
As PETA V.P. Dan Mathews so eloquently put it, “Kanye can’t help making himself look like an idiot, whether at an awards show or a fashion show. He and his girlfriend look like pathetic creatures from a shabby roadside zoo.”
The couple kept wearing fur, of course:
A newly single Kanye West sends the inaugural collection of his clothing line, Kanye West, down the runway at Paris Fashion Week. Named after his mother, dw by Kanye West embraced fur as a signature trend. ‘Ye loves fur so much in fact he showed fur backpacks, coats and vests…for a Spring line.

Kanye West continues to try and make fur backpacks happen with his second collection shown in Paris. The fur coats make a re-appearance too and are actually seasonable this time around.
Kanye West reportedly flies Kim Kardashian out to Paris to attend the Fall 2012 show dressing her in, you guessed it, fur:

Kim Kardashian (a repeat PETA offender in her own right) gets attacked flourbombed on the red carpet by an activist with “close ties” to the organization.
“Not only has PETA lied to the public, but they have proved that they support this kind of behavior…I’ve been a vocal supporter of PETA for a long time but I have also been very vocal about anti-bullying, so this was a huge disappointment for me. As you all know, I don’t condone violence and bullying and what happened last Thursday was just that.”
And of course, PETA claps back:
“We appreciate that Khloé will remain on the animals’ side by not wearing fur – that’s what counts. If one of our volunteers is responsible, it doesn’t alter the fact that no animal deserves to be electrocuted, shot, or poisoned for a bit of fur clothing. Khloé is just defending her sister, and we know she has a good heart, so we wish her well. We just wish she also had more influence on her sister.”
Two snaps and a circle.

Kanye West cements the battle on wax becoming one of the few artists to call PETA out in a song. “Tell PETA my mink is dragging on the floor,” he raps in “Theraflu“ throwing unprecedented shade at the organization.
Some bloggers believe Kim’s flour bombing was the impetus for Kanye West to attack PETA as he also declares his undying love for Kim on the song.

Insult to injury: Kanye debuts the artwork for the single, “Theraflu,” which shows a bare-breasted, headless woman with a luxurious fur coat on and a bottle of Theraflu sitting on top of her neck:

PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews responds to Kanye West‘s lyrics, while throwing in a few insults about his designs in the process (clearly, they were holding that one in for awhile):
“What’s draggin’ on the floor is Kanye’s reputation as a man with no empathy for animals or human beings. He’s a great musician but doesn’t seem to have the fashion sense to design anything more than caveman costumes. We keep hoping that one day he’ll find his heart and join evolved style icons – including Russell Simmons, Pink and Natalie Portman – who have dropped animal skins.”
Caveman costumes? Ouch!

Kim Kardashian appears on The Today Show to discuss her personal life. She calls PETA out on their bullying tactics and addresses her relationship with Kanye West, saying she likes the Theraflu song. Obviously. Here’s the vid:
Messy, messy. Looks like PETA has finally met their match in Kanye West. Who do you think will come out on top in this battle, Glamazons?
