Glam Flashback: 5 Beauty Trends from the 90’s That Should Never Come Back In Style!

Glamazons, have you ever just flipped through old pictures and laughed until it hurt looking at the ridiculous beauty choices you made? (Or am I the only weirdo who does that kind of thing!?) I specifically think about the 90’s and early 2000’s when Drew Barrymore, Claire Danes, the Mowry twins, Alicia Silverstone and Brandy were the poster girls of all-things-trendy. Although, everything from bejeweled hair to a body dripping in glitter paired with the occasional “as-if” or “whatever” was en vogue then, times have definitely changed. In the spirit of beauty nostalgia, I’ve decided to share my top 5 beauty trends  that I hope never come back in style.

Butterfly Clips

This Sunday, I saw something moving on the top of the lady’s head in front of me. I leaned forward for a better view, and realized that the motion came from the wings of the butterfly clip she had placed at the base of her ponytail. I giggled to myself as I remembered the days when it looked like a butterfly rainforest on top of my head from the ridiculous amount of colorful clips that I wore in my hair. And, the sad part is your coolness was dictated by a the-more-the-merrier attitude toward these hair accents.

Body Glitter

A little shimmer never hurt anybody, but when you walk around looking like Christmas in July year-round, an intervention must take place! Between glittery body wash, hand soap, and body gel, my beauty goal in the late 90’s was to take the term glitterati literally. The tragedy of it all was the fact that my go-to lip product was Lip Smackers’ jumbo chap stick that was not only metallic in color but dripping with glitter.

Jumbo Box Braids

When Janet Jackson rocked juicy braids in the movie Poetic Justice back in 1993, women flocked to hair salons in an attempt to copycat the look. I still remember the first time my oldest sister came home with her “dookie braids” pulled into a high ponytail. I must admit, at the time she was fly. Although I’m a fan of braids, I’ll leave this particular trend to Solange Knowles because I just can’t see myself rocking thick box braids anytime soon!

Black Lip Liner

I really don’t know the true origin behind this trend, but I do know that it took the 90’s by storm and one of the fashion/beauty icons we can thank for it is supermodel Naomi Campbell (who flaunted the look in Michael Jackson’s “In the Closet” music video). But, wait there’s more to this hotmess.com of a trend: they don’t even make lip liner in black, so it was really eyeliner being used on the lips! I’m all for innovative beauty, but some rules are NOT made to be broken. You should be locked under the jail if you flaunt this look now.

The Fan Ponytail

This is probably more of a small-town-in-Florida-with-5-traffic-lights trend, but the fan ponytail was the equivalent to wearing extensions these days: everybody was doing it! I can’t find an accurate depiction of the fan, but it was basically pulling your hair into a high ponytail and spreading it out into the shape of a handheld fan. (Atrocious, right!? I know, I know.) Hairspray, spritz and styling gel were all go-top items to maintain this ‘do.

Glamazons, What trends are you happy to see go? What are some of your past beauty faux pas?

Ciao Bellas,

Glamazon Margo
