Rumor Mill: Blake Lively, Selena Gomez to Star in Sex and The City Prequel – Should There Be One?
The rumor mill has been churning for some time with news that there will be a Sex and the City prequel. You read that right.
We all fell in love with the four main characters of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes so much so that there’s interest in their pre-adult years in the ’80s. That interest led author Candace Bushnell to create “The Carrie Diaries” and “Summer in the City” which follows the girls through their teens and early twenties.
Now, those books will be made into a film, which no doubt will be exciting (if its not as poorly-written as Sex and the City II) but there’s one problem. We fell in love with the characters as much as the cast: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Clearly, they can’t play the SATC girls as teens so that means a whole new cast has to be brought on. Hmm…
The rumors are that Blake Lively will play Samantha Jones, Selena Gomez will be Charlotte York, Emma Roberts will be Miranda Hobbs and Elizabeth Olsen (little sister of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen) will play Carrie. Hmmm…

Blake has to really tap into her sexy side to play Samantha, though she’s already got the confidence.
Selena is perfect for Charlotte but needs to be a bit more New England-boarding school-ish, whatever that means.
And is Emma Roberts sarcastic and delightfully awkward enough to play Miranda?
Is Lizzie Olsen complex, charming and neurotic enough to nail Carrie?
If there is a prequel, then only time will tell the answers to my queries.
The only reason I am giving this rumor the time of day is because of the beginning of SATC 3 where they showed all the girls meeting up in the 80s (below). Everything is strategic with the people behind the SATC brand so I’m sure we were getting a taste of the prequel!
But Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis seemed less than thrilled about a prequel.
Sarah Jessica Parker told The Los Angeles Times: “I don’t think we can pretend to go back… It’s creating two histories. It’s like, ‘Oh I didn’t know that about Carrie Bradshaw.”
Kristin Davis told E: “We’ve discussed our history in the show already so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that? And then have like different people with our names? It’s kind of freaky.”
Do they have a point? One thing’s for sure: the fashion will be out of this world!
