5 Reasons Fashion Lovers Should Pick Up The New Ebony Magazine

If you thought Ebony Magazine’s style coverage was better suited for your mother and grandmother, think again.

Thanks to friend of The Glamazons, Elaine Welteroth, and new Editor-in-Chief Amy Dubois Barnett (formerly of Honey Magazine! RIP), Ebony has been redesigned, reinvented and revitalized to appeal to us!

I know, I know. You’re still skeptical. Let me convince you. Here are five reasons to give the new Style Section a try:

1. It features us!

Ok, you know how most of the Street Style features in magazines are, umm, lame? Ebony’s new Style Watch section features fly men and women about town with the same kind of sophisticated photography and unique looks you’ve seen on your fave street style blogs. Even better? These are faces you’ll recognize. Last month, they featured Claire from The Fashion Bomb and Keino Benjamin. This month, stylist Joy Adaeze who has worked with WWD and FashizBlack and America’s Next Top Model alum Jade Cole get their shine.

2. You’ll get style news before you read it anywhere else.

You know the first place I got wind of June Ambrose’s turban line? Ebony. (Yes, I had a sneak peek before the issue came out). The veteran stylist even does a turban tutorial in the issue. Plus the mag is hosting a giveaway with one of her turbans! Follow Ebony’s Twitter, @ebonymag, for more info! When it comes to news on black style, Ebony is way ahead of the competition and giving the dish first.

3. Prepare to behold…the most glamazing vintage fashion photos!

The runway to real life column is one we’ve seen a million times, right? Looks straight from the catwalk and how you can get it for less and work it into your wardrobe. Meh.

Well, Ebony makes it fresh with an extra feature: the fashion flashback (shown above in the April 2011 issue). All trends in fashion are circular (hello, both the 70s and 90s are back now) and Ebony proves it by including a shot of Pat Cleveland or Pam Grier in their trendy fashion glory. And you know…Ebony has an archive of retro photos like no other! P.S. Can’t wait until they feature my love, Queen Diana Ross! She’s my inspiration everyday.

Update!! Diana Ross is featured in the April 2011 issue in the Tastemaker column on celeb hairstylist, Marcia Hamilton. I die…isn’t she giving you everything?

4. Finally, new celebrities!

While other magazines are rotating a handful of celebrities, Ebony is creating new ones. The new Tastemaker feature puts the spotlight on rising socialites and artists, giving you a look at their life and style through their fashion and beauty picks. This month features Gelila Puck (Wolfgang Puck’s wife) whose style is Iman meets Desiree Rogers. Oh and almost all her shoes are custom-made by her BFF…Christian Louboutin. Faints.

5. The entire magazine got a facelift.

I know I’m not the only one who felt Ebony’s design was outdated. The editors heard us. The book has gotten a much-needed makeover primarily due to Darhil Crooks, the new Creative Director who hails from Esquire. Seriously, the pages look so fresh and sophisticated, you’d think it was an entirely new magazine.

So…have I successfully converted you? Pick up the May 2011 issue on newsstands NOW and let me know what you love the most about the new Style Section.

Kisses,

Glamazon Jessica
